Generator maintenance and repair from the same specialist who installs them.
A standby generator needs service at least once a year: oil and filters, plugs, a battery load test, a check of the transfer switch, and a run under load. Our contractors run their own service departments, so the company that installs your unit is the one that maintains and repairs it.

Service questions
What maintenance does a standby generator need?
An annual service at minimum: oil and filter, air filter, spark plugs, battery load test, valve and firmware checks per the manufacturer's schedule, and a look at the transfer switch. The unit exercises itself weekly or biweekly so problems show up before an outage does.
How often should a standby generator be serviced?
At least once a year for most home units, and more often if it ran a long outage: an extended run can use up a full oil-change interval in a few days. Follow the hour and calendar intervals in the manufacturer's maintenance schedule, whichever comes first.
Can you service a generator someone else installed?
Usually, yes. The contractor checks the install against code and the manufacturer's manual on the first visit and tells you what, if anything, needs correcting. Warranty work depends on the brand and whether the contractor is authorized for it.
What does commercial generator testing include?
Where NFPA 110 applies: monthly exercise under load with records, an annual load test, transfer switch operation, fuel quality and battery checks, and the documentation your inspector or fire marshal asks for. A resistive load bank is used when the building load can't reach the required percentage.
My generator shows a fault code. What should I do?
Write down the code and the date, take a photo of the controller screen, and send it with your request. Many faults are low-battery, low-oil or exercise-related and get fixed in one visit when the technician knows the code in advance.
